Progress 8

This score shows how much progress pupils at this school made between the end of key stage 2 and the end of key stage 4, compared to pupils across England who got similar results at the end of key stage 2. This is based on results in up to 8 qualifications, which include English, maths, 3 English Baccalaureate qualifications including sciences, computer science, history, geography and languages, and 3 other additional approved qualifications.

A score above zero means pupils made more progress, on average, than pupils across England who got similar results at the end of key stage 2.

A score below zero means pupils made less progress, on average, than pupils across England who got similar results at the end of key stage 2.

A negative progress score does not mean pupils made no progress, or the school has failed, rather it means pupils in the school made less progress than other pupils across England with similar results at the end of key stage 2.

Schools and colleges not covering full Progress 8 period

Progress 8 measures a pupil's academic progress during Key Stages 3 and 4. Some schools and colleges, including University Technical Colleges, studio schools and further education colleges which cover key stage 4, start educating pupils from the beginning of Key Stage 4, partway through the 5 year period covered by Progress 8. This should be taken into account when comparing their results with those for schools which start educating their pupils from the beginning of Key Stage 3.

Attainment 8

Schools get a score based on how well pupils have performed in up to 8 qualifications, which include English, maths, 3 English Baccalaureate qualifications including sciences, computer science, history, geography and languages, and 3 other additional approved qualifications.

Entering EBacc

A pupil is considered to have entered for the English Baccalaureate if they entered for qualifications in English, maths, sciences, a language and either history or geography. The English Baccalaureate (EBacc) is not a test or qualification; it is a measure used to provide information about a particular range of qualifications.

UTCs, Studio Schools and some FE colleges with KS4 provision provide a specialist technical and professional education. The government’s position is that it is not appropriate to expect the same rates of EBacc entry from these types of provision and that each school should decide on a case by case basis whether its specialist curriculum is compatible with the full EBacc.

Grade 5 or above in English & maths GCSEs

This tells you the percentage of pupils who achieved grade 5 or above in the 2017 reformed English and maths GCSEs. Reformed GCSEs are graded 1 (low) to 9 (high). Grade 5 in the new grading is a similar level of achievement to a high grade C or low grade B in the old grading.

Achieving EBacc at grade 5/C or above

This is the percentage of pupils who achieved the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) at a grade 5 or above in English and maths, and at a grade C or above in the following subject areas: sciences, a language, and either history or geography. The English Baccalaureate is not a test or qualification; it is a measure used to provide information about a particular range of qualifications. The grading of English and maths GCSEs changed in the 2017 GCSEs reforms. Reformed GCSEs are graded 1 (low) to 9 (high). Grade 5 in the new grading is a similar level of achievement to a high grade C or low grade B in the old grading.

Staying in education or entering employment for at least 2 terms after key stage 4

This shows the number of pupils who either stayed in education or went into employment after finishing key stage 4 (after year 11, usually aged 16). This is for pupils who finished year 11 in 2015, which is the most recent data currently available. This figure covers any sustained education or employment destination.
