We plan to publish the primary (key stage 2) results in December 2017, then revised secondary (key stage 4) and 16 to 18 results in January 2018. See our publication timetable for full details.
Due to recent changes to pre-release access (PRA), the department will not be granting 24 hour pre-release access of school and college performance tables data to media organisations in advance of publications. See the statement from the Head of Profession for Statistics in DfE for further information.

Type of school or college

  • Academy - government funded but run by an academy trust rather than a local authority.
  • College - colleges generally are focused on the 16 to 18 phase of education and provide vocational as well as academic courses. Some colleges also provide for full-time study at key stage 4.
  • Independent school - privately funded.
  • Maintained school - government funded and run by a local authority.
  • Special school - schools that specialise in educating pupils with special educational needs.

Progress 8

This score shows how much progress pupils at this school made between the end of key stage 2 and the end of key stage 4, compared to pupils across England who got similar results at the end of key stage 2. This is based on results in up to 8 qualifications, which include English, maths, 3 English Baccalaureate qualifications including sciences, computer science, history, geography and languages, and 3 other additional approved qualifications.

A score above zero means pupils made more progress, on average, than pupils across England who got similar results at the end of key stage 2.

A score below zero means pupils made less progress, on average, than pupils across England who got similar results at the end of key stage 2.

A negative progress score does not mean pupils made no progress, or the school has failed, rather it means pupils in the school made less progress than other pupils across England with similar results at the end of key stage 2.

Detailed guide to Progress 8 - for more information about how the Progress 8 score is calculated.

Schools and colleges not covering full Progress 8 period

Progress 8 measures a pupil's academic progress during Key Stages 3 and 4. Some schools and colleges, including University Technical Colleges, studio schools and further education colleges which cover key stage 4, start educating pupils from the beginning of Key Stage 4, partway through the 5 year period covered by Progress 8. This should be taken into account when comparing their results with those for schools which start educating their pupils from the beginning of Key Stage 3.

Attainment 8

Schools get a score based on how well pupils have performed in up to 8 qualifications, which include English, maths, 3 English Baccalaureate qualifications including sciences, computer science, history, geography and languages, and 3 other additional approved qualifications.

Achieving the English Baccalaureate

The English Baccalaureate is not a test or qualification; it is a measure used to provide information about a particular range of qualifications. A pupil is considered to have ‘achieved’ the English Baccalaureate if they got a grade C or better in the following subjects: English, maths, sciences, a language and either history or geography.

Entering EBacc

A pupil is considered to have entered for the English Baccalaureate if they entered for qualifications in English, maths, sciences, a language and either history or geography. The English Baccalaureate (EBacc) is not a test or qualification; it is a measure used to provide information about a particular range of qualifications.

UTCs, Studio Schools and some FE colleges with KS4 provision provide a specialist technical and professional education. The government’s position is that it is not appropriate to expect the same rates of EBacc entry from these types of provision and that each school should decide on a case by case basis whether its specialist curriculum is compatible with the full EBacc.
