An academy sponsor is a person or organisation approved by the Department for Education to set up an 'academy trust'. An academy trust's role is to help underperforming schools improve their performance. These underperforming schools become 'sponsored academies' of the trust.

As well as sponsored academies, other types of education provision may also be part of a sponsor's 'multi-academy trust'. These include: schools that have chosen to convert to academy status; completely new academies; free schools; studio schools and university technical colleges.

Please note that at the moment the sponsor search function does not include details of free schools, university technical colleges, studio schools or co-sponsored academies (those which have more than one sponsor).
